Crunch Time

Today was a hectic day. Finally, the effects of not getting enough sleep for the past week have caught up to me. When I woke up this morning, I had to convince myself -- force myself -- to get out of bed and get ready for class. But once I got there, it wasn't as bad as I had expected.

When we had our first class discussion yesterday, there was an ... awkward aura about the room. I for one didn't know more than 5 of my classmates by name, even though there are ONLY 11 students in our class! When we began discussions today, we picked off right from where we left... and it was still awkward. By the end of the 2-hour seminar, I felt that the atmosphere changed dramatically, perhaps because I began to participate. Regardless of why I felt the change, I felt much better and more comfortable.

By the time our first week of class officially ended in the afternoon, we were required to turn in our first draft of the outline and annotated bibliography for our research essay. Although it was a pain having to finish everything within so tight a time frame, I cannot stress how free and weightless it felt after turning in that draft.

And to end the day on a good note, Michelle and I went along with another friend to go out for a Friday night at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art)! Can't beat it! Here's a funny video from the Subway, enjoy!

  1. Yueming,

After watching the video clip all I could think was "only in New York".

Help me out here: I've been reading that there were 12 in your class but in this blog you write that there are only 11. Has there been a change?

Why do you suppose it's been so hard for you all to feel comfortable with each other?

  2. Hi Don!

There was a student who transferred out after 2 hours in the morning on the first day of class. We officially only have 11 students now.

It's not that I don't feel comfortable with my classmates. We just haven't have much time to bond because majority of what we have done "in class" has been individual work in the library. It's getting much better with the class discussions we have. I'll keep you posted!

  3. Yueming,

Thanks for the update. I'm learning a lot from your blogs.

And I hope you're seeing that not only are we reading them but we're paying attention to the details. I hope you also noticed the hit counter wherein the Columbia blog has been visited nearly 1100 times in the past 14 days. And, yes, I do visit it a lot but not 77 times each day. You all have fans out here, Yueming.
